Lagoon Nebula

This is the most famous nebula in the constellation of Sagittarius. The constellation points to the center of our galaxy and hence is rich with deep sky objects. The nebula itself is a naked eye object. The nebula has active star forming regions. If you look at this object through a telescope, you will see a tight cluster of stars and some wisps of light. With 6 inches of aperture or more, you will be able to make out a dark shape to the side of the cluster. This shape give the nebula its name.

This was our first attempt of photographing the nebula and was also the first object we chose on the new refractor (Astro-tech AT111.) The image was taken at Bonny Doon airport near Santa Cruz. This site has dark southern horizon. The image is a result of number of sub-images stacked using DeepSkyStacker and further processed to bring out the details.
