This explosion is called a supernova (the final stage in a massive star’s life-cycle). At that time, light from that supernova was sent out in all directions. Light, while being the fastest thing in the universe, does not go infinitely fast. So, 27 million years later, a small portion of that light arrived on Earth for observers on earth to view, photograph and study.  If the Sun went into a supernova (and it won’t, because it is not large enough), we would not know until eight and a half minutes later.  This sort of supernova takes place every 100 years or so, and this one is a coincidence because of the supernova that happened the other well known and photogenic galaxy called Whirlpool galaxy. At the supernova’s peak, it is predicted to be tenth or ninth magnitude, bright enough to be visible through a small (4 inch) telescope under dark skies.
